Southlight

Undergrad Summer Internship (2016)

The Southlight Pavillion was a summer design-build project with UltraModerne Architects and RISD for the Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island (SCCRI).

The project was a malleable plan pavilion to provide community space for public events and performances. The space would also be a source of income to support the non-profit that maintains and occupy the space

The project was community led and funded. Teamed with the City officials, community activists, and a team of students and faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design, we came together and designed the translucent, white-walled pavilion, which glows at night. The cultural center plans to use the pavilion and adjacent lawn for its own community events and may rent it out to the public.

The opening of new facility was overwhelmingly positive.

When the project was completed, a publication was called for to celebrate the completion of the project and commemorate the difficult task it was to bring together designers, an institution, and a community. Read one chapter (below) "Neighborhood" of which was my own contribution to the publication.

Built from a modified catalog greenhouse, the performance space is an extension of the landscape and home of cultural center outdoor/open-air events. The monumental doors attached at every column form a new order that, when open, extend the pavilion from discrete, minimal object out into the city. Simultaneously, timed lighting elements integrated into pavilion, fence, and landscape, allow the project to serve as a beacon within the neighborhood as it transitions from day into night.
