Sublime Paperclip
Undergrad Studio Project (2017)
Sublime Paperclip is another drawing project that started in 2D and ended with a new 3D world. With the help of a paperclips I took a swing at designing the Hospice Facility I wish my Grandmother could have occupied in her final days. The project began with 88 bent paperclips then when through several iterations including 16 color compositions in gouache, which then became 10 installations/buildings of a city-wide Hospice Facility located in Downtown Providence, RI.
The end goal was to imagine a future and discover new forms in the process. Having had a difficult experience with institutional Hospice care with my own family, I wanted to see what my training and discipline could reimagine. In a stretch to inhabit only the drawing process and bring site and program at the end, I wanted to test my own creativity and form-creating/occupying capabilities. What emerged was poetic forms and experience that really embraced death and fought against the serialization and pessimism of most health-care facilities. This is my most personal project but hopefully you find some comfort in the play and aspirations to provide a more fitting death for all of us.
